Back to the Future is the name of a science fiction film trilogy made in 1985, 1989 and 1990. All three films were directed by Robert Zemeckis. The trilogy features the time travels of teenager Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) and his friend Dr. Emmett L. “Doc” Brown (Christopher Lloyd) between the years 1885 and 2015. The three parts are:

Back to the Future (1985) (set in 1985 and 1955)
Back to the Future II (1989) (set in 1985, 2015 and 1955).
Back to the Future III (1990) (set in 1955, 1885 and 1985)

The first part was initially planned as a single film. The open ending, which later formed the transition to part 2, was meant more as a joke. Only commercial success led to the two sequels.
