Niffler
The Niffler is a fluffy, black burrowing animal with a long snout. Its peculiar front-paws remind of spades.
Nifflers are popularly used by goblins for treasure hunting due to their enthusiasm for digging and searching for trinkets and valuables. They not only dig up gold, they deliver it.
However, they are still not suitable as pets. Because of their constant digging, they undermine everything and can even bring down entire houses through their passion. It may be that the lure of chains and rings cause Niffler to attack a person. In 1996, for example, Professor Umbridge had to defend herself against a Niffler attack in her office on several occasions.
On the question of whether nifflers have magical abilities: Newt Scamander lists them as Magical Beasts. They also have quite a few of the abilities that are unique to non-magical animals:
They seek glittering treasures like magpies
burrow dangerously in the earth like voles
are to be used as farm animals for treasure hunting comparable with truffle pigs
deliver the found treasures like trained dogs
They have these abilities naturally and without special training. They are also associated with magical applications and are unknown in the Muggle world.
The Niffler is classified by the Ministry of Magic as ZM class XXX, meaning it is to be tamed by skilled wizards and witches.
