Stranger Things is a U.S. science fiction mystery series released on July 15, 2016 on the U.S. video-on-demand provider Netflix. The idea for Stranger Things came from twin brothers Matt and Ross Duffer.

Netflix released the nine-episode second season worldwide on October 27, 2017. In December 2017, Netflix announced the production of a third season, which was released on July 4, 2019. On September 30, 2019, the production of the fourth season was announced, the shooting of which started in January 2020. According to the Duffer brothers, the series is not scheduled to end after the fourth season.

The series is set in the 1980s in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana. It centers on three boys who are friends and the mysterious girl Elfi, who suddenly appears and has psychokinetic abilities. Starting with the search for a missing boy, the children uncover supernatural events and secret government experiments.

Stranger Things features numerous visual references to well-known films from the 1970s and 80s such as The Goonies, E.T., Alien, Stand by Me, Poltergeist, Shining, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, Back to the Future and others.
