Super Mario

Super Mario (jap. スーパーマリオ, Sūpā Mario, often just called Mario) is the most popular video game character of the Nintendo company and its mascot. He is the protagonist and titular hero of the company’s most successful video game series. The character appears – with few exceptions – only in games for Nintendo game consoles. With over 295 million Mario games sold, the Mario games are not only the most successful Nintendo game series, but the most successful video game series ever. In 2005, he was honored with a star on the Walk of Game.

Mario is a mustachioed, somewhat short and chubby Italian plumber (according to Shigeru Miyamoto, he’s a janitor) wearing blue dungarees, a red shirt and a red peaked cap with an M symbol, whose typical sayings are “Mamma mia” and “It’s-a-me, Mario”. Name, appearance and characterization were initially subject to change and gradually stabilized. In the arcade game Mario Bros. from 1983, Mario appears for the first time in blue pants and a red shirt; with Super Mario Bros. 3, this clothing becomes established. Charles Martinet has lent him his voice since 1995.
