Hermione Jean Granger (in the original: Hermione Jean Granger) is the best friend of Harry and Ron. In their shared experiences, she can often contribute important knowledge and skills. Her wand is made of the wood of a vine and the core is the heart fiber of a dragon. She is a Gryffindor student and in the same grade level as Harry and Ron. Since she was born on Sept. 19, 1979, she is almost a year older than Harry and also comes of age at the beginning of her sixth grade year.
Hermione comes from an all-Muggle family. Her parents are successful dentists. At home, she has never had anything to do with the magical world. When she gets the invitation to Hogwarts and learns that she is a witch, she proudly wants to train her new special skills to the best of her ability. However, the fact that she is labeled an inferior witch and discriminated against as a mudblood by racist magical people because of her Muggle ancestry is soon made clear to her by Draco Malfoy’s insults.
